Not pretty, but an effective display

Ponteland 20 Barnard Castle 13 Durham and Northumberland Division Two

Ponteland achieved another victory despite not being at their best against spirited opponents.

The hosts had some early pressure, but Barnard Castle took the lead with a penalty.

A nasty looking tip tackle on David Gregory saw tempers flare and a yellow card brandished. Pont kicked to the corner, the forwards drove on and as the ball was released Will Newbigin burst through to score.

He converted the try to make it 7-3 after 24 minutes, although back came the visitors with a penalty to reduce the lead to just one point.

The hosts responded well and another massive forward line-out drive saw Ritchie Moller claim the try from under the bodies (12-6).

Good inter-passing with Michael Searle saw Gregory in for a try at the start of the second half before Barnard Castle responded with a converted score (17-13).

But Pont, helped by dominance in the scrum, had the majority of possession for the remainder of the game and a Newbigin penalty made it 20-13 at full time.
