Morpeth athletes play their part in NEYDL win
Twenty one young athletes from Morpeth Harriers were selected in a 146 strong team that represented the North East Youth Development League under the watchful eye of team manager Dave Thomas in the annual Inter League match against Yorkshire at Cudworth, near Barnsley at the beginning of September
For the fourth year in succession, the North East team were again victors, this time by a runaway margin of 871 points to 673.
There were seven individual winners from the club with three athletes achieving two wins apiece, while two athletes also competed in no less than four events and six competed in three.
U17 Charlotte Earl was victorious in both the Long Jump, with a best of 4.48 metres, and then the Triple Jump with 10.66m. Fellow U/17 Jess Gardiner meanwhile won both the Hammer (41.36m) and the Discus (31.27m).
U/15 thrower Nat Arkle was similarly victorious in two field events with throws of 10.83m in the Shot and 29.33m in the Discus, while Alice Geoghegan won the Javelin with a best of 27.65m and U/17 Dylan Gooding the 1500m in a time of 4 minutes 26.69s.
Meanwhile U/17 David Sanderson was one athlete who had a very busy day out, competing in all three throwing events and winning the Hammer with a best of 24.49m.
An even busier afternoon’s shift was put in by U/17 girls Amy Lott and Rosie Winter. Amy placed second in the 80m hurdles, was fourth in the 200m, ran a personal best of 13.46s in the 100m and still found the strength to compete in a winning 4 x 100m relay team!
Not to be outdone, Rosie also ran both 100m and 200m, placed third in the Javelin and formed part of the same winning relay as Amy.
Mia Belton was another on the day winner, recording a PB of 43.08s in the U/15 300m. Later, she also took part in both the 100m and 300m relays. U/13 Vicky Hodgeson and U/15s Abi Leiper, Olivia Carruthers and Alice Geoghegan all also showed their commitment by taking part in no less than three separate events.
Meanwhile, Laura Weightman has been selected for the GB squad to run in the World Championships in Doha.
