PONTELAND achieved their first league victory of the season with a good team display at home to Ashington.

The home side played into the wind in the first half but they managed the conditions well and after a spell of pressure, Peter Maughan took the ball a metre out and dived over to make it 5-0.

On 12 minutes, a quick penalty was taken by Maughan, the forwards picked up and drove and Kelly was the one to score.

After missing some opportunities for further tries, Pont eventually got their third when the forwards caught and drove a line-out. After a few phases, McGookin touched down.

Ashington kept battling and, either side of half-time, they scored two tries to make the score 15-12.

As the second half went on however, the hosts stepped up a gear and from a short line-out, Maughan sold an outrageous dummy to the opposition to score easily before a good move fed the ball to Moller – who skipped his way through in the centres.

Both tries were converted by James Newbigin and, in the final minutes, he kicked a penalty to make the final score 32-12.
