Pont continue their run of injuries and defeats

Gateshead 18 Ponteland 13 Durham and Northumberland, Division One

PONTELAND suffered more bad luck as they fell to a narrow defeat at bottom club Gateshead.

To add to the mounting injury list, Chris Freer had to leave just 15 minutes before kick-off to attend to a family matter. And more knocks were picked up during the game, including Jonny Murphy, who dislocated his shoulder.

The two sides kicked over a penalty apiece early on – Will Newbigin for Pont – then on 20 minutes, the visitors drove a line-out 25 metres before Dan Harrison touched down for an unconverted try.

Ponteland had two five-metre scrums that resulted in penalties against Gateshead, but on the third occasion the away side were penalised. Then the hosts went forward just before half-time and achieved an unconverted score to make it 8-8 at half time.

Five minutes into the second half, Scott Anderson was given a yellow card as he was judged to have deliberately knocked on and Gateshead took advantage of the sin-binning with a penalty and converted try.

The home side were then given two yellows following Pont pressure and from another good line-out drive, Craig Robinson scored an unconverted try (18-13).

Gateshead missed a few penalties in the final few minutes, so the visitors did at least come away with a losing bonus point.
