PONTELAND High School’s Year 10 rugby team has added another prize to the school’s trophy cabinet.
Just days after the Year 11 squad captured the Under 16 county cup, they won the Under 15 prize with an excellent 43-17 victory against The Royal Grammar School at the Druid Park ground, Callerton.
Callum Chick surged through the opposition defence to score under the posts after five minutes and Pont went on to dominate up front, scoring two further tries to take a 19-0 lead as half-time approached.
RGS never gave up, rallying close to half-time and scoring under the posts after several good phases of controlled rugby.
The second half was much the same as the first, with Ponteland on top in the forwards battle, allowing their backs space to run riot.
Centre Jake Pickard demonstrated direct and balanced running and he was able to get behind the RGS defence at will, scoring four tries in an excellent individual performance.
Subject Leader for Boys PE, Allan Atkinson, said: “The team has had a great season, crowning it with an excellent win against a strong team from RGS.”
The winning squad was: Charlie Atkinson, Corey Beautyman, Callum Chick, Robbie Crow, Jake Dixon, Harry Griffiths, Jonty Hudson, Jake Pickard, Sam Robinson, Tom Shield, Tom Skidmore, Adam Stephens, Jamie Taylor, Lewis Thompson, James Towart-Adams.
Jamie, Callum and Jake Dixon were also members of the U16 squad. Many of the winning players are long-time members of Ponteland Rugby Club.
