Pont up and running with bonus win

Ponteland 32 Winlaton Vulcans 7 Durham and Northumberland, Division Two

Ponteland got their league campaign off to a solid start with a bonus-point victory against Winlaton.

On four minutes, Dave Gregory ran a great line to put Scott Anderson in for an unconverted try.

Both sides then had spells of attacking pressure, but the defences held firm. One of the dangerous attacks by the away side was only stopped five metres out as Dan Harrison forced a turnover.

A penalty for offside saw a Winlaton player shown a yellow card for repeat team infringements and Anderson kicked it over, then a scrum 10 metres out saw Pont shunt the visitors over the line for Robinson to ground and Anderson’s conversion made it 15-0 at half-time.

A Phil Bramble interception score and Ritchie Moller try from a line-out drive extended Pont’s lead (27-0) and although Winlaton scored a converted try near the end of the game, the hosts had the final word when Sam Walton finished off an excellent team move (32-7).
