A TEAM of Ponteland youngsters made their mark on the North East rugby scene by winning a prestigious sevens schools competition.
The Year 8 rugby squad at Ponteland Middle School travelled to Northern Rugby Club for the tournament, which was split into two groups of four.
After qualifying for the semi-finals, they beat King’s School in Tynemouth.
This was followed by a victory over a combined Newminster and Chantry Middle Schools and Technology Colleges team from Morpeth in the final by three tries to one.
The lads are coached at school by Dave Robson and the team is managed by Paul Baggett.
Many of them also attend Ponteland Rugby Club, where they are coached by Paul Gerrard.
Mr Baggett said: “Schools sevens tournaments are usually dominated by private schools, so it was a fantastic achievement by the boys to win this event.
“The referee for the final was from Newcastle School for Boys and he said the quality of the game was outstanding.”
The squad is as follows: Tom Reeman, Rhys Edgell, Dan Scott, Will Ramshaw, Adam Thompson, Ryan Gerrard, Elliot Blain, Josh Silipo, Josh Beswick, Will Robinson and Sam Olds.
Five of them have played for the Northumberland area team.
