Morpeth RFC U13 12 Blyth RFC U13 0 Northumberland Plate final

MORPETH RFC U13s put in the performance of the season to beat Blyth RFC in a hard-fought Northumberland Plate final at Druid’s Park, Woolsington, on Sunday.

After absorbing a lot of pressure from the forwards-dominated Blyth team for the opening 10 minutes, the Morpeth youngsters turned the tables and never looked back after man-of-the-match Joe Turnbull broke through to score after 15 minutes.

Fly-half Josh White converted to make the score 7-0 before Turnbull added a second try following some powerful rucking by the Morpeth forwards and close support from the hard-working backs.

Turning around 12-0 in front at half-time, Morpeth continued to dominate throughout the second period coming close on several occasions as the backs, led by full-back George Devereux-Tinley and well marshaled by White, pressed the Blyth line.

Some strong tackling by Morpeth kept a late Blyth surge at bay, seeing the Mitford Road-based juniors through to a well-earned victory and their first trophy of the season.

Morpeth coach Dave Chattaway said the victory was the perfect finish to a long season, adding: “I’m so pleased for the boys, who have worked so hard for this win.

“Everyone can be proud of the part they played and we now look forward to building on this with more success next season.”
