The drop looms large despite decent effort

Horden 32 Ponteland 15 Durham and Northumberland, Division One

PONTELAND put up a brave fight against the league leaders, but they are now a step closer to relegation.

The hosts scored early on when the ball was recycled quickly and moved wide, with Heckles touching down.

Thirkell then off-loaded short to Malcolm, who powered through a gap to go under the posts. Jones converted the try to make it 12-0 to Horden.

The away side came back into the game after a series of penalties. From one of them, they kicked for a line-out before a superb drive took them to the try line.

Pont’s pressure told as Robinson touched down out wide. The conversion was missed.

Horden came back on the attack and increased the lead from a catch and drive as the visitors were given a taste of their own medicine – Davison was the scorer. Jones converted to make it 19-5 at half-time.

From one clearance, Pont worked a catch and drove well. Kelly then scored an unconverted try. Horden responded with a penalty by Bains and a try from James.

After a home player was sin-binned for a cynical pull down at the line-out, the away side got their third try when the bounce from a kick landed beautifully for Searle to touch down for an unconverted score.

Jones scored a try for Horden a few minutes from the end to make the final score 32-15.
