Three sides win but first team loses

Guisborough 26 Morpeth 15 Durham and Northumberland, Division One

A poor first half was costly as Morpeth lost their top-of-the-table clash on Saturday.

The home side scored three tries, two of which were converted, in the opening 40 minutes. The visitors’ only points came from a Karl Birch penalty.

Guisborough extended their lead early in the second half with a converted score, but Morpeth did not let their heads drop and they had long spells of attacking pressure.

A home player was given a yellow card for persistent infringements by his team and Will Thornton and Simon Michie touched down to make the full-time score more respectable. Birch kicked over one conversion.

l Morpeth’s Reivers team enjoyed an away victory at Billingham II. Adam Grieve touched down twice, Jack Elliott and Richard Flook scored a try each and Flook was also successful with two conversions in the 24-22 win.

The Edwardians beat Alnwick III 27-10 at home. Harry Thompson scored a hat-trick of tries and Craig Shaw and Richard Fretwell also went over. Jamie Pemberton kicked over a conversion.

Morpeth Stags’ points scorers in their 74-10 win against Consett III at Mitford Road were as follows: Simon Cox (four tries and two conversions), Andy Cowans (three tries), Andy Norris (two tries), Adrian Jonas (two tries), Terry Hewitt (five conversions) and Stu Arkle (one try).
