The Highwaymen face an exciting first month, with Warrington on the horizon; a side who narrowly missed out on promotion last season. They then welcome Lancaster City in the first home game of the campaign, before a trip to Brighouse Town in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. Bank Holiday Monday sees us take a trip to the seaside and Whitby Town before another away game, this time at FC United of Manchester.

Despite a tricky start on paper, Gray is very much ready for the challenge.

“I’m really looking forward to the season,” said the Highwaymen’s boss.

“The first game of the season is a great example of how tough the league will be, but we can’t wait to get started. Every game is going to be tough in this division and we step into the unknown once again, but I’ve got huge confidence in the squad of players we have.”

On Tuesday Morpeth continued their build-up to the new season when they faced Blyth Spartans in a friendly at Croft Park.

Morpeth kicked off their pre-season programme with a deserved 4-2 away win over Blyth Spartans at Croft Park on Tuesday.

Town hit the front in the 13th minute through a Jeff Henderson header before Sean Reid netted against his old club.

Scott Fenwick reduced the deficit for the home side, but Jack Foale netted early in the second half to put Morpeth 3-1 up.

In the 84th minute Spartans were awarded a penalty and Dale Pearson converted from the spot to make it 3-2 but in the closing stages Foale bagged his second to seal the victory.

Morpeth gave a debut to Michael McKeown and Reid with Shabz Mohammed on the bench against a Blyth side who were six games into their pre-season.

Morpeth were naturally delighted with the win, which the Highwaymen will hope to build on when they play their second pre-season game tonight (Thursday, July 18) against Sunderland U23s at Craik Park, KO 7.30pm.
