A NOVEL way to beat the winter blues has been suggested by Northumberland County Council.
The authority has backed the Mood Boosting Books campaign by The Reading Agency, which recommends 27 cheer up reads.
The books have been read, reviewed and recommended by reading groups across the UK and include classics such as The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and more recent titles like To The Moon and Back by Jill Mansell.
Seasonal Affective Disorder affects around one in 15 people in the UK and around 17 per cent of the population suffers from a milder form of the condition, known as the winter blues.
Now council chiefs are urging sufferers to pop along to their local library to see if it helps.
Executive Member for Libraries Neil Bradbury said: “Reading great books can directly affect your sense of wellbeing and transform the way you see the world.”
