Fashion goes back to its roots at Belsay

FORGET Gucci and Armani – you can take a look down the catwalk of times gone by at Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens during its month-long Fashion From The Past extravaganza.

With daily costume displays showing the trends of Tudor nobles and a series of exciting weekend presentations, featuring stunning designs from the Victorian and Georgian eras, visitors will be able to see some of the clothing styles that were popular through the ages.

Highlights include a weekend commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s ill-fated journey, fashion with rations from the 1940s and an evocative journey into the finery and fashions of Edwardian society.

The main events during the month are as follows.

Costume presentations: Saturday, May 5, Sunday, May 6, and Monday, May 7, 11am to 5pm – see a variety of sumptuous Tudor costumes displayed in fashion presentations revealing the secrets of Tudor courtly costumes, plus presentations dressing the gorgeous Georgians, for the fashion conscious gentleman and lady.

Costume displays: Tuesday, May 8, to Friday, May 11, Monday, May 14, to Friday, May 18, and Monday, May 21, to Friday, May 25, all 10am to 5pm – Tudor costumes fit for a King and Queen on display.

A variety of replica costumes for Tudor nobles, plus hands on activity for children.

Costume presentations: Saturday, May 12, and Sunday, May 13, 11am to 5pm – to commemorate the Titanic’s first and only voyage, Belsay invites visitors back to April 1912 for an evocative journey into Edwardian society.

Lucy Adlington from The History Wardrobe follows the story of famous dress designer Lady Lucy Duff-Gordon, known in Society as Lucile.

A unique presentation of historical costumes, documents and survivor testimonies offers a fascinating glimpse into life on board Titanic and the aftermath of the tragedy.

There will also be a ‘dressing the Jacobeans’ feature, 17th century costume from rich to poor, plus sumptuous Tudor costume on static display.

Costume presentations: Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20, 11am to 5pm – take a look at costumes from Victorian sporting life, appropriate for this year’s Olympics. There will be presentations of medieval dress for the nobles and servants and also sumptuous Tudor costume on static display.

Costume presentations: Saturday, May 26, and Sunday, May 27, 11am to 5pm – this weekend examines fashion with rations from the 1940s, contrasting with displays of Regency dress for dandies and ladies, plus sumptuous Tudor costume on static display.

Entry prices to Belsay are £7.70 for adults, £6.90 concessions, £4.60 children and £20 for a family ticket. English Heritage members go free.
