In another instalment of the Waterstones’ Book Club, the store’s booksellers offer more suggestions for a good read.
If you are looking for a book/author to fill the void while George RR Martin writes the next Game of Thrones novel, why not try Connie’s recommended author Joe Abercrombie? He is known for The Last Law Trilogy and has written three stand-alone novels. However, a second trilogy is taking the fantasy world by storm. The Shattered Sea Trilogy begins with Half a King. A young prince Yarvi is betrayed by his family and left for dead and makes a vow to reclaim a throne that he never wanted. Gathering a strange fellowship of the outcast, he finds they can help him more than any noble could. This book is full of twists and turns.
If crime novels and dark psychological thrillers are more your thing, then Jo is reading the much-talked-about The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. It is a fast, punchy read, with each chapter moving between the two main characters – Rachel, who is one of the most unreliable narrators you will ever meet in a novel, and Megan, a woman Rachel has watched from a distance. This is a twisting, turning read, which will keep you up late into the night.
If you are looking for a novel with some emotional depth then why not try Michelle’s recommended read, Nora Webster by Colm Toibin? It’s set in 1970s Ireland and Nora has just become a widow. She not only has to deal with her intense grief, but has to still deal with the living, especially her two sons, who are not coping well, and her two daughters on the brink of adulthood. Nora has to face new challenges on her own and deal with situations that her husband would have dealt with. An emotional, but satisfying read.
