THE sun came out for a quacking good show at Ponteland on Sunday.

Hundreds of families came along to watch the annual Duck Race event in Ponteland Park and there was also a new event for them to enjoy.

The centre-piece of the family fun day, organised by Ponteland Rotary Club, was a series of races for adults and children in which 500 ducks were floated down the River Pont, with cash and other prizes for the winners.

This year, for the first time, children were invited to make their own boats and race these competitively. Tom Storer was the proud winner of this contest.

Plenty of other entertainment was on hand – including a bouncy slide, fairground organ, ball in the bucket competition, guess the weight of the lamb and sideshows.

The event benefited from the help given by Ponteland Scouts, pupils from Ponteland High School and the Ponteland Young Farmers.

Ponteland Rotary President Peter Lowry said: “We are delighted to mount this family event each year. It is obvious that the young people attending it have a great day out.

“We are also able to raise funds to support local charities and other good causes.

“There is lovely family atmosphere and we, as Rotarians, are also able to thoroughly enjoy the day’s events.

“We also receive huge support from local businesses, with Waitrose and many other local shops and companies entering into the spirit of the occasion. At this stage, we think we may have raised more than £2,500, which we will distribute to help deserving causes.”
