Families can enjoy a fairytale trail at Belsay Hall at half term

FAMILIES can enjoy some half-term excitement at attractions across the county starting from this weekend.

Take a magical journey at Belsay Hall, as staff at the site have put together a fairytale trail that will cover the hall, castle and gardens.

Those taking part will pick up a trail-sheet upon arrival with information about each story. They include The Three Little Pigs and Jack & The Beanstalk.

Children will then need to keep their eyes peeled for images showing scenes from the English fairytales so they can fill in their sheet.

The activity runs from Saturday to Sunday, February 23, between 10am and 4pm.

Assistant events manager at Belsay Hall, Samantha Robinson, said: “We thought it would be really nice for families to spend some time together doing something that will inspire their imagination and the hall, castle and gardens are an ideal setting for such a trail.

“We’ve used Joseph Jacobs’ collection of English fairytales and it includes a story that is local to the North East.”

On Friday, February 21, discover Belsay in a different light by going on a guided night tour of the gardens and castle (7pm to 9pm).

Those who come along for the torchlight trail, not suitable for children under the age of 10, will learn about the fascinating family that used to live at the hall. They are advised to bring a torch with them, but they will receive a hot drink upon arrival.

Advance booking is essential – call 01661 881636. Tickets are priced £10 for adults and £8 for concessions.

A few miles to the north, a range of Wake up at Wallington activities are taking place. On Saturday, from 11am to 12.30pm and between 1.30pm and 3pm, learn more about the world of maps, from following directions and using a compass to making your own map.

During the same time periods on Sunday, hunt for bugs in the woods. On Monday and Wednesday (12.30pm to 3.30pm), enjoy stories as you sit on the sofa and relax in the drawing room or have a go at making your very own book in the central hall.

An activity for budding gardeners is being held on Tuesday between 11am and 12.30pm and from 1.30pm to 3pm and visitors can join Wallington’s rangers at various times on Thursday, February 20, and Friday, February 21. For more information, call 01670 773963.
