Tuck into a feast of heritage on your doorstep

Heritage Open Days are back, with a range of walks, talks and exhibitions.

The initiative begins today and runs throughout the weekend to encourage people to learn more about the cultural treasures on their doorstep. Here’s what’s on offer in this area.

Thursday

l A Morpeth Meander, Northumberland County Blind Association, Staithes Lane, 11am to 1pm. Three-mile guided walk with Alan Davison.

l Mad Meg of Meldon, Meldon Park, 1pm to 4.30pm. A 4.3 mile guided walk with David Barker.

l Collingwood House and St Robert’s Church, Oldgate, Morpeth, 1pm to 4pm. See inside the home of Admiral Lord Collingwood and learn about the ‘Hero of Trafalgar’.

l Morpeth’s Town Treasures, Mayor’s Parlour, Town Hall, 2pm to 4pm. Visit the civic suite and meet the Mayor.

l John Grundy on Robert Johnson and Morpeth Town Hall, Town Hall, 7.30pm. Illustrated talk.

Friday

l Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum, Bridge Street, 10am to 5pm. Music, chat to pipers and have a go at the instrument. Children’s activities on Saturday.

l William Turner of Morpeth: The First Great English Botanist, Town Hall, 11am to noon. Talk by Dr Marie Addyman, followed by a tour of the William Turner Garden, from 1.30pm to 2.30pm.

l Newminster Abbey: Northumberland’s Forgotten Abbey, Morpeth Chantry, 7pm to 8.30pm. Illustrated talk by Chris Hudson.

Saturday

l 300 Years And Counting, Morpeth Town Hall, 10am to 1pm. Morpeth Antiquarian Society exhibition and advice on family history research from Northumberland Registration Service.

l St George’s United Reformed Church, Bridge Street, Morpeth, 10am to 4pm. Music.

l Wallington, Cambo, 10.30am to 5pm. Explore the house and grounds.

l Busman’s Holiday, Morpeth Bus Station, 10.30am to 12.30pm, 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Barry Mead’s heritage coach tour. Booking essential by noon on Friday on 01670 503866.
