A kazoo Christmas

A MORPETH musician is hoping to spread the festive spirit after recording his own Christmas song.

Bluesman performer Carl Cape, who runs the Chevstar Records label, has spent three years finding the perfect ingredients for his seasonal musical feast.

The festive lyrics have been inspired by everything from frosty pine forests and snowy Northumbrian moors to Christmas light events and stores buzzing with shoppers.

And now, after teaming up with some of the region’s finest musicians, It Must Be Christmas Time is available to download on digital services.

Mr Cape said: “I love Christmas songs and I was delighted to take up the invitation to write one, but I didn’t think it would take quite so long to finish it.

“I wanted to evoke the old-fashioned magic of Christmas so I immersed myself in the whole experience, listening to classic songs and watching festive films.

“The band has decked the whole song out with some twinkling musical baubles, Cajun fiddle, 1950’s style guitar, double bass and drums. And our kazoo orchestra’s joyous rendition of Good King Wenceslas is sure to bring a smile to people’s faces.”

He added: “I have to thank my friend Derek Allan, whose original challenge and song Winter’s Kiss inspired me to get cracking on the task. It’s taken me rather longer than I expected, but I am thankful for Derek’s inspiration.”

The track was recorded by the Carl Cape Band at the Mill Studios in Alnwick and was produced by Ally Lee.

The band has also recorded a Cajun country folk-style version of Auld Lang Syne.
