Northumberland castle to host 'Great North Abseil'

The castle, near Haydon Bridge, has stepped in to support charities who rely on sponsorship raised in the Great North Run, which would have taken place over the same weekend, September 12-13.

To help fill some of their hole in their finances, Langley Castle has responded to a request from north east company, Wild About Adventure, to become the base for the ‘Great North Abseil’.

Participants will be launching themselves off of the castle’s battlements, at a height of around 90 feet (27.4 metres).

The whole event will be socially-distancing compliant and all coronavirus practices will be adhered to.

Langley’s executive general manager, Margaret Livingstone-Evans, says: “Langley has stood the test of time and has had various adversaries attempting to scale its walls and hold it under siege over the centuries.

"It will make a great change for our walls to be used by those wishing to do good, rather than harm and we are delighted to be able to play our part in the inaugural Great North Abseil.”

The cost of the abseil is £35 and participants will have the claim to fame of being amongst the very first to have ever abseiled down the castle.
